Biography

A multiple Oscar nominee, English cinematographer John Mathieson is well-known for his association with ace filmmakers like Ridley Scott and Guy Ritchie. After starting in Hollywood as an assistant to Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Beristain, Mathieson debuted independently in the mid-1990s and subsequently rose to prominence when he helmed the camera department in the epic historical drama Gladiator (2000).

His work in the movie also earned Mathieson the maiden Academy Award nomination of his career, besides winning a BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography.

In 2005, Mathieson landed the second Oscar nomination of his career with the musical drama The Phantom of the Opera (2004). The psychological horror thriller Hannibal (2001), the epic historical drama Robin Hood (2010), and the superhero film X: First Class (2011) are some of his other notable film credits.

More recently, Mathieson cranked the camera for Guy Ritchie`s action spy movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), the superhero movie Logan (2017), and the fantasy mystery movie Pokemon Detective Pikachu (2019).
