John Quidor

Biography

John Quidor (1801–1881) was an American painter known for his historical, literary and genre paintings. Born in Tappan, New York, he moved to New York City with his family as a child and studied painting briefly under John Wesley Jarvis.

Quidor became particularly known for paintings inspired by the stories of Washington Irving, including Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He also created works based on James Fenimore Cooper's novels. His paintings often combined dramatic scenes, humor and mysterious or supernatural elements.

Among his best-known works are The Headless Horseman Pursuing Ichabod Crane, The Return of Rip Van Winkle, The Money Diggers and Leatherstocking's Rescue. He also earned a living by painting decorative panels for fire engines and other commissions.

Although Quidor received limited recognition during his lifetime, his work was rediscovered in the 20th century and he is now regarded as an important early American painter. He died in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1881.
