Biography

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was an American painter best known as one of the leading portrait artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on January 12, 1856, in Florence, Italy, to American parents, he grew up traveling throughout Europe and received his early art training in Florence and Paris.

Sargent studied under the French portraitist Carolus-Duran and was strongly influenced by artists such as Diego Velázquez and Frans Hals. He gained early recognition at the Paris Salon and became famous for his confident brushwork and sophisticated portraits.

His controversial portrait Madame X helped establish his reputation, although it caused a scandal at the 1884 Paris Salon and contributed to his move to London. He later became a highly sought-after portraitist for wealthy and aristocratic clients.

Sargent also created landscapes, watercolors and large murals, including important decorations for the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. From the early 1900s, he increasingly focused on watercolor and landscape painting rather than formal portraits.

John Singer Sargent died on April 15, 1925, in London, aged 69. He remains one of the most celebrated portrait painters of his generation, remembered for his remarkable technique, expressive brushwork and ability to capture the character of his subjects. (nga.gov)
