John Vanderlyn

Biography

John Vanderlyn was an American Neoclassical painter best known for his historical paintings, portraits, and mythological subjects. He was among the first American artists to study in France and played an important role in introducing French Neoclassical painting to the United States.

Born on October 15, 1775, in Kingston, New York, Vanderlyn showed an early interest in drawing and painting. He initially worked in an art supplies shop in New York City and later studied under the American portrait painter Gilbert Stuart. With the support of politician Aaron Burr, he travelled to Paris in 1796, where he studied under François-André Vincent. He also spent time in Italy, studying classical art and European painting traditions.

Vanderlyn became the first American painter to exhibit at the Paris Salon and received a medal for his work. After returning to the United States in 1815, he continued producing portraits and historical paintings. However, he struggled to find sufficient commissions and financial success.
