Joseph Fiennes, born Joseph Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes on May 27, 1970, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, is a distinguished English actor known for his compelling performances across film, television, and stage. He hails from a remarkably artistic family, with his father, Mark Fiennes, a photographer, and his mother, Jennifer Lash, a novelist. His siblings also found success in the arts, including acclaimed actor Ralph Fiennes, directors Martha and Sophie Fiennes, and composer Magnus Fiennes.

Fiennes' early life was marked by a nomadic existence, with his family moving frequently, fostering a diverse upbringing that included time in West Cork, Ireland. He initially pursued fine art in Suffolk but soon gravitated towards theatre. He honed his craft at the Young Vic Youth Theatre before undertaking formal training at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1993.

His professional stage career began in the West End with "The Woman in Black" (1993), followed by "A Month in the Country." He then spent two seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, solidifying his classical theatre credentials in productions like "Son of Man," "Les Enfants Du Paradis," and "Troilus and Cressida."

Fiennes achieved widespread recognition in 1998 with two pivotal film roles. He garnered critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of William Shakespeare in the Academy Award-winning "Shakespeare in Love." In the same year, he starred as Robert Dudley in the acclaimed historical drama "Elizabeth," opposite Cate Blanchett. These roles cemented his reputation as a versatile actor capable of inhabiting complex characters in period settings.

Throughout the 2000s, Fiennes continued to build a strong filmography, starring in movies such as "Enemy at the Gates" (2001), "Luther" (2003), "The Merchant of Venice" (2004), and "Goodbye Bafana" (2007). He also made a significant impact in television, with roles in "FlashForward" (2009-2010) and "American Horror Story: Asylum" (2012-2013).

More recently, Fiennes gained considerable international attention for his portrayal of Commander Fred Waterford in the critically acclaimed Hulu series "The Handmaid's Tale" (2017-2021), a role that earned him an Emmy nomination. He continues to engage in diverse projects, including the 2023 Netflix film "The Mother" and a notable stage performance as Gareth Southgate in "Dear England" in 2023, which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award nomination.
