J. Sasikumar
Biography
J. Sasikumar, born Nambiathusseril Varkey John on 14 October 1927, was a prominent Indian film director who worked primarily in Malayalam cinema. He began his directing career in the mid-1960s and went on to direct more than 140 films, earning the popular title “Hitmaker Sasikumar” because of the commercial success of his movies.
Sasikumar holds several notable records in Malayalam cinema. He directed 141 films, making him one of the most prolific directors in Indian cinema. He also directed 84 films starring Prem Nazir as the lead actor, one of the longest actor-director collaborations in Indian cinema. In 1977 alone, he directed 15 films, a remarkable record for a single year.
His filmography spans several decades and includes family dramas, romances, action films, and socially themed stories. His ability to consistently deliver commercially successful films made him one of the major directors of Malayalam cinema during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
In recognition of his immense contribution to Malayalam cinema, Sasikumar received the J. C. Daniel Award in 2012, the Kerala government's highest honour for contributions to the Malayalam film industry.
J. Sasikumar died on 17 July 2014, at the age of 86. He is remembered as one of the most prolific and commercially successful directors in the history of Malayalam cinema.
