Kabir

Biography

Kabir was one of the most influential poet-saints and reformers of medieval India. He is believed to have lived during the 15th century (around 1440–1518 CE), in Varanasi, though the exact dates of his life remain uncertain.

Born into a Muslim weaver’s family, Kabir was deeply spiritual from a young age. According to tradition, he was influenced by the Hindu saint Ramananda, and his teachings reflect a blend of Hindu and Islamic philosophies. Kabir rejected religious divisions and emphasized devotion to one God, simplicity, and truth.

His poetry, written in simple Hindi with touches of Avadhi and Braj dialects, expressed profound spiritual truths in direct and powerful language. His verses, known as “Kabir Ke Dohe”, are short couplets that teach moral and spiritual lessons. They often criticize hypocrisy in religious practices and promote love, compassion, and inner purity.

Kabir’s ideas formed the basis of the Bhakti Movement, which sought to bring unity among people of different faiths through devotion and equality.

He is remembered as a voice of wisdom and tolerance, whose words continue to inspire people across generations. His teachings are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib and other devotional texts, making him a lasting symbol of spiritual harmony.
