Kalabhavan Haneef

Biography

Kalabhavan Haneef was an Indian actor and mimicry artist who worked primarily in Malayalam cinema. Born in 1959 in Mattancherry, Kerala, he became known for his comic performances in films, television programmes, and stage shows.

Early Life and Career

Haneef developed an interest in mimicry while he was still in school. He later worked as a salesperson while pursuing his passion for mimicry and eventually became associated with Cochin Kalabhavan, an institution that played an important role in the careers of many Malayalam entertainers. He became particularly known for his impersonations of actors such as Nedumudi Venu and Raghavan.

His stage performances made him popular in Kerala as well as among Malayalam audiences outside India. His success in mimicry eventually led him to acting in films and television.

Film Career

Haneef made his film debut with Cheppukilukkana Changathi in 1991. Over the course of his career, he appeared in more than 150 films, generally portraying comic and supporting characters.

He was featured in several well-known Malayalam films, including Ustad Hotel (2012), Drishyam (2013) and Driving Licence (2019). His performances were often characterized by his distinctive comic timing and expressive mannerisms.

Television and Stage Work

In addition to cinema, Haneef had a significant career in Malayalam television. He appeared in popular programmes and serials such as Minnukettu, Nadhaswaram, Abi's Corner, Comediyum Mimicsum Pinne Njanum, Manassiloru Mazhavillu and Tilana Tilana.

His background in mimicry remained an important part of his artistic identity, and he continued performing in stage shows throughout his career.

Personal Life and Death

Kalabhavan Haneef was married to Waheeda, and they had two children. He was hospitalized in Kochi after experiencing breathing difficulties and died on 9 November 2023 at the age of 63.
