Biography

Kalidasa is celebrated as one of the greatest poets and dramatists in Sanskrit literature. Although the exact details of his life remain uncertain, scholars generally believe he lived during the Gupta period (around the 4th–5th century CE), a time often referred to as the Golden Age of India.

Very little is known about Kalidasa’s personal life. Traditional legends describe him as a man of humble origins who gained wisdom and poetic genius through the blessings of the goddess Kali. Malavikagnimitram – A romantic play about King Agnimitra’s love for the maid Malavika.

Vikramorvashiyam – The story of the celestial nymph Urvashi and King Pururavas, blending romance and mythology.

Epic Poems (Mahakavyas)

Raghuvamsha (The Dynasty of Raghu) – A grand poem narrating the lineage of Lord Rama, highlighting heroism and virtue.

Kumarasambhavam (The Birth of Kumara) – Describes the marriage of Shiva and Parvati and the birth of their son, Kartikeya.

Meghaduta (The Cloud Messenger) – A lyrical poem in which an exiled lover sends a message to his distant beloved through a passing cloud; it is admired for its exquisite imagery and emotional depth.
