Kamal Mukut is a distinguished figure in the Indian film industry, renowned for his extensive contributions as a producer, distributor, and financier. His career, spanning over five decades, has significantly influenced Bollywood's content creation and distribution landscape.
Early Career and Entry into Film Production
Kamal Mukut began his journey in cinema in 1972 as a film location scout for the movie "Gora Aur Kala." His keen understanding of the industry's dynamics enabled him to establish a comprehensive media and entertainment enterprise. By 1975, he ventured into film distribution in Rajasthan, eventually expanding to regions like Delhi/UP, West Bengal, Patna, and Assam. His entrepreneurial acumen led to collaborations with prominent Bollywood figures, including Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Prakash Mehra, among others.
Association with Zee Television Network
In 1991, Kamal relocated to Mumbai to join Zee Television Network, where he was responsible for the entire filmed content vertical, including film production, acquisition, syndication, and strategy. His efforts were instrumental in Zee's expansion into the music business and the launch of its first dedicated music channel. In recognition of his significant contributions, he was honored with the title "Pillar of Zee."Transition to Multiplex Development and Recent Productions.
In 2000, Kamal developed India's first multiplex in a non-metro market, establishing a successful model that was later adopted nationwide. In 2014, he passed the baton of movie production to his son, Deepak Mukut, and together they produced films such as "Sanam Teri Kasam," "Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana," "Mulk," "Genius," and "Dhaakad." They also developed a robust distribution network to reach a wider audience.
Current Endeavors
Currently, Kamal Mukut serves as a consultant to the CEO of Zee Network, overseeing filmed entertainment businesses and acquisitions for the group. He is also involved in producing upcoming movies like "Gadar 2" and "Soorya," both starring Sunny Deol, and a TV series on Vivekanand for Doordarshan under the banner M.M. Moviez.
