Biography

Kario Salem is an American actor, screenwriter, and stage performer whose career has covered television, film, theatre, and screenwriting. He initially gained recognition as an actor before establishing himself as an award-winning writer.

Early Life

Kario Salem was born on May 23, 1955, in Los Angeles, California, United States. He was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from Agoura High School in 1973. He later attended the Juilliard School, where he studied drama.

Acting Career

Salem began his professional acting career in the 1970s, appearing in television productions and stage performances. He developed a reputation as a versatile character actor and appeared in numerous television series and made-for-television films.

Among his early television work were appearances in Once an Eagle, Testimony of Two Men, and Centennial. He also appeared in an Emmy-winning episode of MASH*, directed by Alan Alda.

His film roles included ** Triumph of the Spirit (1989), ** 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), and ** Killing Zoe (1993)**. In 1492: Conquest of Paradise, directed by Ridley Scott, he played the Grand Inquisitor. In Killing Zoe, he portrayed Jean, a French gangster.

Theatre Career

Theatre has also been an important part of Salem's career. He appeared in productions of works by major playwrights and performed both on Broadway and Off-Broadway.

He played Scoop in the Broadway production of The Heidi Chronicles. He also performed as Cousins in George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara alongside Cherry Jones and Diane Lane at the American Repertory Theater.

In 1991, he received a Drama-Logue Award for his performance in Richard Greenberg's The Extra Man. He also received recognition from Boston critics for his performance in Major Barbara.

He wrote the television film ** Don King: Only in America (1997)**, a biographical drama about boxing promoter Don King. The production was highly acclaimed, and Salem won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie. The project also received a Peabody Award.

The Rat Pack

Salem subsequently wrote the HBO television film ** The Rat Pack (1998)**, which dramatized the lives and relationships of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford.

His screenplay earned him another Primetime Emmy nomination as well as recognition from the PEN Center USA.

The Score

One of Salem's best-known feature-film writing credits is ** The Score (2001)**.

The crime thriller starred Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, and Marlon Brando. Salem received story and screenplay credit for the film.

The story follows veteran safecracker Nick Wells, who is persuaded to participate in one final robbery involving a valuable French sceptre. The film marked a notable meeting of acting legends Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando.
