Career and Breakthrough

Kumar's entry into the film industry was marked by his first directorial venture, Palasa 1978 (2020), which garnered critical acclaim. The film focuses on themes of caste discrimination and untouchability, issues that are deeply rooted in Indian society. 

It was well-received for its gritty realism and compelling storytelling, earning him recognition as a promising director. His work on Palasa 1978 earned him several awards, including Best Debut Director at the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) and the Santosham Film Awards.

Following the success of Palasa in 1978, Karuna Kumar continued to expand his career. He directed Metro Kathalu, which was released on the Aha streaming platform. Although the film faced mixed reviews, Kumar continued to work on projects that delved into deep social issues.

In 2021, he directed Sridevi Soda Center, a film starring Sudheer Babu and Anandhi. 

The movie explored themes of honor and revenge within a rural Indian context. Though the film's narrative style received some criticism, it further established Kumar as a director willing to tackle complex social issues while maintaining a connection with mainstream audiences​.
