Keegan-Michael Key is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer celebrated for his sharp wit, improvisational skill, and versatility across comedy and drama. He was born on March 22, 1971, in Southfield, Michigan, USA, and raised in Detroit.
Key was adopted at a young age by two social workers and grew up in a supportive family environment that encouraged creativity and humor. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre from the University of Detroit Mercy, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from Pennsylvania State University. His classical acting background would later blend seamlessly with his comedic talents.
Career
Keegan-Michael Key began his professional career performing with the Second City Detroit and Second City Chicago, two of the most prestigious improvisational comedy troupes in the United States. His ability to blend character work with social commentary quickly set him apart.
He gained early national attention as a cast member on MADtv (2004–2009), where his comedic chemistry with fellow performer Jordan Peele laid the foundation for one of television’s most iconic comedy partnerships.
In 2012, the duo created and starred in the critically acclaimed sketch series Key & Peele on Comedy Central. The show became a cultural phenomenon, known for its sharp satire, clever writing, and viral sketches — including the famous “Substitute Teacher” and “Obama’s Anger Translator” skits. The series won a Peabody Award and multiple Emmy Awards, solidifying Key’s place as a leading voice in modern comedy.
