Kim Seong Hun

Biography

Kim Seong-hun, born on 20 February 1971 in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, South Korea, is a South Korean film and television director, screenwriter, and script editor. He studied at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and began his filmmaking career as an assistant director on Oh! Happy Day (2003) and He Was Cool (2004).

 

He made his feature directorial debut with How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men (2006). He gained major critical recognition with A Hard Day (2014), which premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival. The film earned him several Best Director awards, including at the Grand Bell Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards.

 

His other major film is The Tunnel (2016), a successful disaster thriller starring Ha Jung-woo and Bae Doona. He later became internationally known for directing Netflix's historical zombie series Kingdom (2019–2020) and the special episode Kingdom: Ashin of the North (2021).

 

His later work includes Ransomed (2023), which he directed and co-wrote. Kim is particularly recognized for combining dark comedy, action, thriller, historical drama, and horror in distinctive and suspenseful stories.
