Biography

K. R. Vijaya is an acclaimed Indian actress whose illustrious career spans more than four decades in South Indian cinema. Born in Kerala and raised in the temple town of Palani, she was introduced to the world of performing arts at a young age. Her father, who was associated with M. K. Radha’s drama troupe, encouraged her to pursue acting, paving the way for her entry into films.

 

 

She made her cinematic debut in 1963 with Karpagam, directed by K. S. Gopalakrishnan. The film proved to be a breakthrough and established her as a promising actress. Known for her versatility, K. R. Vijaya went on to portray a wide range of roles, from mythological and devotional characters to strong family-oriented performances.

 

 

Over the years, she acted extensively in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema, appearing in nearly 400 films. Her notable works include Karpagam, Selvam, Saraswathi Sabadham, Nenchirukkum Varai, and Namma Veetu Theivam. She also acted in Kannada films and made a Hindi appearance in Oonche Log. Her frequent portrayal of divine roles earned her immense popularity among audiences.

 

 

In 1973, she was honored with the title “Punnagai Arasi” (Queen of Smiles), a recognition of her graceful screen presence and radiant smile. She shared screen space with legendary actors such as Sivaji Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran, Rajkumar, and many others, and admired several leading actresses of her era.
