K.S. Prasad

Biography

K. S. Prasad (1923 – 1998) was an Indian cinematographer, editor, production designer, producer, and director who worked extensively in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi cinema. He was regarded as one of the skilled technicians of Indian cinema, known for his artistic visual style and contribution to filmmaking across multiple languages.

Born in 1923 in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, K. S. Prasad belonged to a Telugu-speaking family. He developed an interest in photography and studied at the St. Xavier's Technical Institute, Mumbai, where he earned a degree in Photography. His technical training helped him build a strong foundation in cinematography.

K. S. Prasad entered the film industry with the 1956 Telugu black-and-white film Ilavelpu. He later gained recognition for his cinematography in Tamil cinema, particularly with the 1964 color film Puthiya Paravai.

One of his greatest achievements came with Thillana Mohanambal, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography (Colour) at the 16th National Film Awards. The film was praised for its vibrant visuals, detailed production design, and effective presentation of classical music and dance traditions.

Throughout his career, K. S. Prasad worked in different creative roles, including cinematography, editing, production design, producing, and direction. His work contributed significantly to the technical and artistic development of Indian cinema during the 1950s to 1980s.

K. S. Prasad is remembered as a versatile filmmaker and a talented cinematographer whose visual contributions enriched several memorable films across Indian languages.
