Early Life and Domestic Career

Mendis's cricketing journey commenced during his school years, where he showcased exceptional talent, leading to his selection as the captain of the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His leadership and performance at the youth level paved the way for his entry into first-class cricket with the Colombo Cricket Club in 2014. His early domestic performances highlighted his potential, setting the stage for his ascent to international cricket.

International Career

Mendis made his Test debut on October 22, 2015, against the West Indies, becoming Sri Lanka's 132nd Test player. Despite a modest start, his resilience was evident. He soon showcased his batting prowess with a maiden Test half-century during Sri Lanka's tour of England in 2016. His One Day International (ODI) debut followed on June 16, 2016, against Ireland, where he impressed with a half-century. Shortly thereafter, he ventured into Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against England on July 5, 2016.

Demonstrating resilience, Mendis returned to form and leadership, being appointed vice-captain in April 2021 for the ODI series against Bangladesh. He later captained Sri Lanka during the 2023 ODI World Cup after regular skipper Dasun Shanaka was sidelined due to injury. Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka secured notable victories, including a significant win against England by eight wickets.
