Larry Rivers

Biography

Larry Rivers (1923–2002) was an American painter, sculptor, musician and filmmaker who became an important figure in postwar American art. Born Yitzroch Loiza Grossberg on August 17, 1923, in New York City, he first pursued a career as a jazz saxophonist before turning seriously to painting in the mid-1940s.

Rivers studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts and later earned a degree in art education from New York University. His early paintings were influenced by Abstract Expressionism, but he soon developed a distinctive style combining figurative imagery, loose brushwork, historical subjects and popular culture.

One of his best-known works, Washington Crossing the Delaware (1953), reinterpreted a famous American historical painting loosely and unconventionally. His approach helped bridge Abstract Expressionism and the emerging Pop Art movement.

Rivers also worked in sculpture, printmaking, photography, film and mixed media, and collaborated with poets including Frank O'Hara. He continued experimenting throughout his career and became an influential figure in American contemporary art.

Larry Rivers died on August 14, 2002, in Southampton, New York, at the age of 78. He is remembered as an innovative artist whose work helped connect Abstract Expressionism with Pop Art.
