Les Baxter was an American musician, composer, and arranger best known for pioneering the “exotica” music genre. His work blended orchestral arrangements with elements inspired by tropical, Latin, and Polynesian sounds, creating lush, atmospheric compositions that became highly popular in the mid-20th century.

Leslie Thompson Baxter was born on March 14, 1922, in Mexia, Texas, USA. He studied piano from a young age and later attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music. His early training in classical music gave him a strong foundation in composition and orchestration.

 

 

Career Beginnings

Baxter began his career as a vocalist, briefly working with bandleader Freddy Martin. He also joined the renowned Mel-Tones, a close-harmony group associated with Mel Tormé. However, his true passion lay in composing and arranging music.
