Linda May
Biography
Linda May is an American non-professional actress and real-life nomad who gained international recognition for her appearance in Chloé Zhao's critically acclaimed drama film Nomadland (2020). She portrays a fictionalised version of herself in the film, bringing her personal experiences of travelling, living in a trailer and working temporary jobs to the screen. Her natural performance contributed to the film's realistic portrayal of modern nomadic life in the United States.
Early life and background
Linda May was born and raised in San Diego, California. Before becoming involved in filmmaking, she worked in several professions, including building inspection, construction, plans examination and retail. She also worked as a general contractor and held various other jobs throughout her life.
As she approached retirement age, she faced financial difficulties and became concerned about the possibility of supporting herself on a limited retirement income. This situation encouraged her to explore an alternative lifestyle and eventually led her to life on the road.
Life as a nomad
Linda became part of the travelling community of Americans who live in recreational vehicles, vans and trailers while moving between locations for temporary employment. She travelled in a small yellow trailer called The Squeeze Inn and worked seasonal jobs, including as a campground host and an Amazon warehouse employee.
Her experiences were also documented in Jessica Bruder's nonfiction book, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, which explores the lives of older Americans who travel across the country while searching for work and affordable living arrangements.
Acting career
Linda May became widely recognised through Nomadland (2020), directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Frances McDormand. She appears as Linda, a character based on her own experiences and personality.
The film combines fictional storytelling with real-life nomads who portray versions of themselves. Linda's participation helped bring authenticity to its depiction of people living outside conventional housing arrangements.
