Biography

Lindsay Crouse is an American actress known for her extensive work in film, television, and theater. She was born on May 12, 1948, in New York City. She is the daughter of playwright Russel Crouse and studied at Radcliffe College, graduating in 1970.

Career

Crouse began her performing career as a modern and jazz dancer before turning to acting. She made her Broadway debut in Much Ado About Nothing in 1972 and subsequently developed a successful theater career, earning an Obie Award for her performance in David Mamet's Reunion.

Her film career became prominent in the 1970s and 1980s. She appeared in Slap Shot (1977), All the President's Men (1976), Prince of the City (1981), The Verdict (1982), and Places in the Heart (1984). Her performance in Places in the Heart earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

One of her most notable roles came in House of Games (1987), written and directed by her then-husband David Mamet. She played Margaret Ford, a psychiatrist who becomes fascinated by the world of professional con artists.

Television Work

Crouse also built an extensive television career. She had a recurring role as police officer Kate McBride on Hill Street Blues and later played Professor Maggie Walsh in the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She also appeared in Alias, Law & Order, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Minds, ER, NYPD Blue, and other television productions.

Later Work and Legacy

Among her later film appearances are The Indian in the Cupboard (1995), The Arrival (1996), The Juror (1996), The Insider (1999), and Mr. Brooks (2007). She also appeared in the 2023 film Chantilly Bridge.

Lindsay Crouse is respected as a versatile character actress whose career has successfully spanned Broadway, independent cinema, major Hollywood productions, and television.
