Biography
Lol Crawley, born 2 November 1974 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, is a British cinematographer and director of photography. He studied media production at Northumbria University and began his career as a camera assistant before establishing himself as a cinematographer.
Crawley made his feature cinematography debut with Ballast (2008), which won the Excellence in Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival. His other acclaimed films include 45 Years (2015), The Childhood of a Leader (2015), Vox Lux (2018), The Devil All the Time (2020), The Humans (2021), and White Noise (2022).
He has also worked extensively in television, serving as cinematographer on The OA and Utopia, and photographing the Black Mirror episode “Crocodile.”
Crawley achieved his greatest recognition for The Brutalist (2024), directed by Brady Corbet. His cinematography earned him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography in 2025.
He is a member of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) and, since 2025, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). His work also extends to music videos and commercials for artists and brands, including Bob Dylan, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Adidas, Dior, and Mercedes.
