Biography

Mackenyu is a Japanese actor born on November 16, 1996, and the son of renowned actor, producer, director, and martial artist Sonny Chiba. From a young age, he pursued a variety of interests, including Kyokushin karate, gymnastics, water polo, wrestling, horseback riding, and music. He began studying piano at the age of ten and later learned to play both the saxophone and flute.

 

 

His breakthrough came with his portrayal of Arata Wataya in the Chihayafuru film trilogy (2016), a performance that earned him the Japan Academy Newcomer of the Year Award in 2017. He went on to gain wider recognition through roles in Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) and the racing drama Over Drive (2018).

 

 

Mackenyu continued to build his reputation with major roles in successful Japanese films, including Enishi Yukishiro in Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter (2021) and Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar and Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Transmutation (2022).

 

 

In 2021, he was cast as Roronoa Zoro in the live-action adaptation of One Piece, a role that introduced him to a global audience. He also starred as Seiya in Knights of the Zodiac (2023) and appeared in the Disney+ productions Dragons of Wonderhatch and House of the Owl (2023), further establishing himself as an internationally recognized actor.
