Madhubala (born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi; 14 February 1933 – 23 February 1969) was one of the most celebrated actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Often referred to as the "Venus of Indian Cinema," she was admired for her extraordinary beauty, charisma, and remarkable acting talent. During the 1950s and 1960s, she became one of Hindi cinema's biggest stars, appearing in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

Early Life

Madhubala was born in Delhi, British India, into a Pashtun Muslim family. She began her career as a child artist under the name Baby Mumtaz and later adopted the screen name Madhubala. Her acting debut as a leading actress came with Neel Kamal (1947).

Career

Madhubala rose to fame with the supernatural thriller Mahal (1949), which established her as a leading star. She went on to appear in many classic films, including Tarana (1951), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955), Howrah Bridge (1958), Kala Pani (1958), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Jhumroo (1961), and Half Ticket (1962).

Her portrayal of Anarkali in Mughal-e-Azam is regarded as one of the greatest performances in Indian cinema and remains her most iconic role. She worked alongside many legendary actors, including Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Guru Dutt, Bharat Bhushan, and Pradeep Kumar.

Personal Life

Madhubala married actor and singer Kishore Kumar in 1960. She had suffered from a congenital heart condition for many years, which affected her health and limited her acting career during its later stages.
