Biography

Mala Sinha (born Alda Sinha; 11 November 1936) is a veteran Indian actress who worked extensively in Hindi, Bengali, and Nepali cinema. She was one of the leading actresses of the golden era of Hindi films and was known for her versatility, emotional performances, and graceful screen presence.

Early Life

Mala Sinha was born on 11 November 1936 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Kolkata, West Bengal, India). She was born into a Christian family and was named Alda Sinha. She developed an interest in acting during her school years and began her career in Bengali films before entering Hindi cinema.

Film Career

Mala Sinha made her Bengali film debut with Roshanara (1952). She gained recognition in Hindi cinema with Badshah (1954) and soon established herself as one of the most successful actresses of the 1950s and 1960s.

She appeared in several memorable films, including Pyaasa (1957), Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Anpadh (1962), Gumrah (1963), Jahan Ara (1964), Himalaya Ki God Mein (1965), Aankhen (1968), and Maryada (1971).

Known for portraying strong and emotional characters, Mala Sinha worked with many leading actors of her time, including Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra, and Biswajit. Her pairing with actor Dharmendra was especially popular among audiences.

Mala Sinha received several nominations and honors for her performances. She was among the highest-paid actresses of her era and remained a major star throughout the 1960s.

Personal Life

Mala Sinha married Nepali actor and filmmaker Chidambar Prasad Lohani in 1968. The couple has a daughter, actress Pratibha Sinha.
