Malay Prakash

Biography

Malay is passionate about the art and craft of cinematography and has made a career for himself by bringing emotion, life, and light to the films he creates and works on. The kind of guy who is difficult to go on walks with as he is often found capturing everyday moments on his camera, both still and moving. It is this passion that pushes him towards bringing out a filmmaker's voice through his lens.

Born in Patna City, India he explores the mix of cultures and comes from a rich background in Indian heritage.

He received a Masters Degree in Film from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

He has worked in advertising as a producer-director for BBH, Singapore. The work made him travel to various parts of Asia including Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia among a few which helped widen his experience & perspective shaping his versatile outlook towards Cinematography.

Hands-on in his approach, he experiments with lighting and unusual framing to achieve maximum visual impact. His vision towards his work is to bring unflinching and an invisible moving camera approach to immerse the audience in the intimate experiences of the protagonists.

Moving back to India in 2015, Malay has shot over 100 commercials across varied genres. He started his way into the world of narrative cinema with Meghna Gulzar's directorial "CHHAPAAK" after having worked on the 2nd unit Cinematography of the film "RAAZI" alongside comrade Jay Patel.

Over the last year, he has been able to achieve some extremely intimate collaborations with a bunch of young directors and create some fantastic music videos for popular and indie artists alike and has been at the epicenter of the music video scene's resurgence in the country.

Currently Malay is busy getting his hands dirty in more advertising and music video work broadening his craft whilst on the lookout for his next favourite collaborator.
