Mankada Ravi Varma

Biography

Mankada Ravi Varma (4 June 1926 – 22 November 2010) was an acclaimed Indian cinematographer and film director who made a lasting contribution to Malayalam cinema. Born in Mankada, Malappuram, Kerala, he studied at Victoria College, Palakkad, before attending the Film and Television Institute of Technology in Chennai.

He began his career working on documentaries and short films before entering feature filmmaking. His early cinematography credits included Aval and Olavum Theeravum, with the latter establishing him as an important visual talent in Malayalam cinema.

Ravi Varma became particularly renowned for his long association with filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Their collaboration produced several landmark films, including Swayamvaram, Kodiyettam, Mukhamukham, Anantaram, Mathilukal, Vidheyan, Kathapurushan, and Nizhalkkuthu. He also worked with prominent filmmakers such as G. Aravindan and P. N. Menon.

His cinematography was noted for its restrained, naturalistic visual style, which complemented the contemplative storytelling of Malayalam art cinema. Swayamvaram earned him the National Film Award for Best Cinematography in Black and White in 1973, while he also received Kerala State Film Awards for his work.

In addition to cinematography, Ravi Varma directed films including Anugraham (1977), Avalkku Maranamilla (1978), and Nokkukuthi (1983), with Nokkukuthi also featuring him as cinematographer.

In recognition of his contribution to Malayalam cinema, he received the J. C. Daniel Award in 2006, Kerala's highest honour for contributions to the state's film industry. He died in Chennai on 22 November 2010, aged 84.
