Biography

Manoj K. Jayan is an Indian actor known primarily for his work in Malayalam cinema, with appearances in Tamil and Telugu films as well. Born on 15 March 1966 in Kottayam, Kerala, he is the son of renowned Carnatic musician K. G. Jayan.

 

 

Early Life and Career

Manoj developed an interest in acting from an early age. After completing his studies at Government College, Kottayam, he joined the Southern Film Institute in Thiruvananthapuram to receive formal training in acting. He began his professional career with television, appearing in the Doordarshan serial Kumilakal, where his performance earned attention.

His first credited film was Mamalakalkkappurathu (1988), although his earlier film Ente Sonia was not theatrically released.

 

 

Breakthrough and Film Career

Manoj K. Jayan established himself as a versatile actor through a series of acclaimed performances during the late 1980s and 1990s. His role as Kuttan Thampuran in Sargam (1992) was a breakthrough and remains one of his most celebrated performances.

He subsequently appeared in notable films including Perumthachan (1991), Parinayam (1994), Sopanam (1993), Venkalam (1993), Thalapathi (1991) and Anandabhadram (2005). He became particularly known for portraying complex, aristocratic, and emotionally intense characters.

 

 

Award-Winning Performances

Manoj has received the Kerala State Film Award for his performances on multiple occasions. His portrayal of Kuttan Thampuran in Sargam, Thalakkal Chandu in Pazhassi Raja (2009), and Kunjiraman in Kaliyachan earned him major recognition.

His performance as Thalakkal Chandu in Pazhassi Raja, alongside Mammootty, further demonstrated his ability to handle historical and action-oriented roles with dramatic depth.

 

 

Other Work

In addition to Malayalam cinema, Manoj has appeared in Tamil and Telugu productions. He has also worked as a playback singer, contributing his voice to songs in films and music projects.

Throughout his career, he has moved comfortably between lead roles, supporting characters and antagonistic parts. His performances in films such as Dhrona 2010, Pazhassi Raja, Anandabhadram and Kaliyachan have helped establish his reputation as a character actor with considerable range.

 

 

Personal Life

Manoj K. Jayan was previously married to actress Urvashi. They have a daughter, Tejalakshmi. He later continued his family life and has remained active in the film industry.
