Biography

Marilyn Sokol (born February 22, 1944) is an American actress, comedian, and educator known for her versatile performances across film, television, and theater. With a career spanning over five decades, she has earned accolades including an Obie Award, a Bistro Award, and an Emmy Award. ​

 

Early Life and Education

Born in the Bronx, New York, Sokol graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C., and later attended New York University. She began her professional career in 1966 as a belly dancer in the national production of Man of La Mancha, starring José Ferrer. Following this, she joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe, a politically charged theater group, before making her Off-Broadway debut. ​

 

Film and Television Career

Sokol's film credits include roles in Foul Play (1978), Can't Stop the Music (1980), The Basketball Diaries (1995), and Man on the Moon (1999). On television, she voiced Ma Otter in the beloved holiday special Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas (1977) and appeared in series such as Sex and the City, Law & Order, and Difficult People.

 

Theater Work

A seasoned stage performer, Sokol has appeared in numerous productions, including Broadway's Conversations with My Father (1992) and Off-Broadway's The Beggar's Opera. She has also performed in regional theaters, such as the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. ​

 

Cabaret and Teaching

In addition to her acting career, Sokol is an accomplished cabaret performer and singer. She has taught acting and comedy since 1968, serving as a distinguished lecturer in the theater program at Lehman College.
