Matthew Goode

Biography

Matthew William Goode was born on April 3, 1978, in Exeter, Devon, England. Raised in the village of Clyst St. Mary, he is the youngest of five children. His father, Anthony, was a geologist, and his mother, Jennifer, was a nurse and amateur theatre director. Goode attended Exeter School, an independent school in Exeter, and later pursued studies at the University of Birmingham and London's Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

 

Career Highlights

Goode made his screen debut in 2002 with ABC's television film Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. His breakthrough role came in 2004 with the romantic comedy Chasing Liberty, earning him a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice Breakout Movie Star – Male.

 

He subsequently appeared in several notable films, including Woody Allen's Match Point (2005), Imagine Me & You (2006), and Copying Beethoven (2006). In 2008, Goode starred as Charles Ryder in Brideshead Revisited, and in 2009, he portrayed Ozymandias in the superhero film Watchmen. His performance in A Single Man (2009) further showcased his range as an actor.

 

Goode's television work includes roles such as Finley "Finn" Polmar in The Good Wife (2014–2015), Henry Talbot in Downton Abbey (2014–2015), and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, in The Crown (2017), for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. From 2018 to 2022, he starred as Professor Matthew Clairmont in the fantasy romance series A Discovery of Witches.

 

In 2022, Goode portrayed famed Paramount studio head Robert Evans in The Offer, a miniseries about the making of the classic 1972 gangster film The Godfather.
