Biography

Matthew Modine is an American actor, filmmaker, and activist known for his work in film and television. He was born on March 22, 1959, in Loma Linda, California. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has played a wide variety of characters in dramas, comedies, war films, thrillers, and television series.

Early Life and Career

Modine grew up in a large family and developed an interest in acting while working various jobs. He moved to New York City and studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. He began his screen career in the early 1980s with appearances in films such as Baby It's You (1983) and Streamers (1983).

His breakthrough came with Birdy (1984), directed by Alan Parker. Modine starred alongside Nicolas Cage in the acclaimed drama, portraying a young Vietnam veteran struggling with the psychological effects of war.

Major Film Roles

Modine became internationally recognized after starring as Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987). The film became one of the most influential war movies of its era and established Modine as a major actor.

He subsequently appeared in films including Married to the Mob (1988), Pacific Heights (1990), Memphis Belle (1990), Cutthroat Island (1995), Any Given Sunday (1999), The Blackout (1997), and Transporter 2 (2005).

In Jonathan Demme's Married to the Mob, Modine played Mike Downey, an FBI agent who becomes romantically involved with Angela, a mobster's widow played by Michelle Pfeiffer.

Television Career

Modine has maintained an extensive television career. His credits include Weeds, The West Wing, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

He achieved a new generation of popularity with Dr. Martin Brenner in the Netflix science-fiction series Stranger Things. His performance as the mysterious scientist became one of the show's recurring elements.

In addition to acting, Modine has worked as a director, producer, and writer. His directorial projects include If... Dog... Rabbit... (1999), Jesus Was a Commie (2012), and I Think I Thought (2009).
