Maurice Prendergast

Biography

Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924) was an American painter and one of the early American artists to embrace Post-Impressionism. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he moved with his family to Boston in 1868 and later developed his artistic career there.

Prendergast studied art in Paris during the 1890s, where he was influenced by European modernists. He became known for colorful watercolors, oil paintings and monotypes depicting parks, beaches, city streets and people enjoying leisure activities. His paintings featured bright, jewel-like colors, bold outlines and flattened, decorative forms.

He was associated with The Eight, a group of American artists who challenged traditional exhibition practices, and participated in the famous 1913 Armory Show. His work was strongly influenced by artists including Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard.

Prendergast spent his final years in New York and continued painting scenes of everyday life and leisure. He died on February 1, 1924, in New York City. Today, he is remembered as an important early American modernist whose vibrant, decorative style helped introduce European modern art to American audiences.
