Biography

Meena Kumari (1 August 1933 – 31 March 1972), born Mahjabeen Bano, was one of the greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Widely known as the "Tragedy Queen" of Bollywood, she was celebrated for her emotionally powerful performances and exceptional screen presence. During a career spanning more than three decades, she appeared in over 90 films and won four Filmfare Awards for Best Actress.

Early Life

Meena Kumari was born on 1 August 1933 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India. Her father, Ali Bux, was a theatre artist and musician, while her mother, Iqbal Begum (born Prabhawati Devi), was an actress and dancer. Due to financial hardship, Meena Kumari began acting in films as a child under the screen name Baby Meena.

Career

Meena Kumari made her acting debut as a child artist in the late 1930s and gradually transitioned to leading roles. She rose to stardom with Baiju Bawra (1952), which earned her the inaugural Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she delivered a series of critically acclaimed performances, becoming the definitive dramatic actress of her era. Her ability to portray emotionally complex characters made her one of Hindi cinema's most respected performers.

Death

Meena Kumari passed away on 31 March 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 38, shortly after the release of Pakeezah, which became one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema.
