Biography

Mehboob Khan was one of the most influential filmmakers in Indian cinema, celebrated for creating socially relevant and emotionally powerful films. As a director, producer, and screenwriter, he played a pioneering role in shaping Hindi cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. His films often explored themes of poverty, social justice, rural life, and the strength of women, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Born on 9 September 1907 in Bilimora, Gujarat, India, Mehboob Khan entered the film industry as an actor before moving into directing. In 1940, he founded Mehboob Productions, and later established the renowned Mehboob Studios in Mumbai, which became one of India's most prestigious film studios.

His greatest achievement came with Mother India (1957), an epic drama starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, and Rajendra Kumar. The film became a landmark in Indian cinema and was the first Indian film to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It remains one of the greatest Indian films ever made.

Other notable films directed by Mehboob Khan include Aurat (1940), Anmol Ghadi (1946), Anokhi Ada (1948), Andaz (1949), Aan (1952), Amar (1954), and Son of India (1962). His films combined grand storytelling with strong social messages and memorable performances.

Mehboob Khan received numerous honors during his career, including the Filmfare Award for Best Director for Mother India. His contributions helped elevate Indian cinema to international recognition.

He died on 28 May 1964 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 56. His legacy continues through his timeless films, particularly Mother India, which remains a cornerstone of Indian cinematic history.
