Biography

Melody London is an American film editor, director, and producer whose career has been closely connected with independent cinema and documentary filmmaking. She began her professional editing career in the 1980s and gained early recognition through her work on Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (1984), a landmark independent film that won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

 

 

Career

London has worked extensively as a film editor across fiction films, documentaries, and television projects. Her early collaborations with Jim Jarmusch included Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Mystery Train, and Coffee and Cigarettes. Her editing work has contributed to several influential independent productions.

 

 

She has also worked on films such as Novocaine, The Wannabe, The Sheik and I, and Risk. In Risk, Laura Poitras’ documentary about Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, London served as one of the editors and also received a co-producer credit.

 

 

Work in Documentary Film

Documentary filmmaking has been an important part of London’s career. She has collaborated with a number of independent filmmakers and artists, working on projects that explore politics, culture, art, and society. Her credits include Heart of a Dog, directed by Laurie Anderson, and Stray, for which she worked as a consulting editor.

 

 

Her editing work on Risk further demonstrated her experience with documentary storytelling. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras.

In addition to editing, London has worked as a director and writer. Her film Lost was released in 1996, with London credited as director, editor, and screenwriter.

Education and Teaching

London earned an MFA from New York University's film school, graduating in the same period as filmmaker Spike Lee. 

 

She has also shared her professional knowledge through teaching film at institutions including NYU, CalArts, and Hunter College, as well as through guest lectures internationally.
