Early Life and Background

Merlapaka Gandhi hails from Renigunta, a town in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh. Born into a literary environment, Gandhi is the son of renowned Telugu novelist Merlapaka Murali. Growing up in a family that valued literature and storytelling, he developed a strong inclination toward creative expression from a young age. This literary exposure played a significant role in shaping his passion for writing and cinema.

 

After completing his early education in his hometown, Gandhi pursued a course in filmmaking, which helped him understand the technical and creative aspects of the craft. His background in storytelling combined with formal training,g gave him a solid foundation for his future in the film industry.

Career

Merlapaka Gandhi made his directorial debut with the 2013 Telugu film Venkatadri Express, starring Sundeep Kishan and Rakul Preet Singh. The film, a romantic comedy with a journey-based narrative, was both a critical and commercial success. It was praised for its tight screenplay, humorous sequences, and engaging storytelling. The film’s success established Gandhi as a promising new director in Tollywood.

 

Following this, he directed Express Raja in 2016, featuring Sharwanand and Surabhi. The film, which blended crime and comedy, received positive reviews and became a hit, particularly appealing to younger audiences. Gandhi's knack for combining quirky characters, smart writing, and clean humor became his signature style.

 

He later directed Krishnarjuna Yuddham (2018), starring Nani in a dual role. Though the film had mixed reviews, it was noted for its entertaining elements and Gandhi’s attempt at experimenting with a more action-oriented narrative while retaining his humorous tone.
