Merle Oberon (February 19, 1911 – November 23, 1979) was an Indian-born British actress who became one of Hollywood's most glamorous stars during the 1930s and 1940s. Known for her beauty, elegance, and dramatic performances, she gained international fame through films such as The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), Wuthering Heights (1939), and The Dark Angel (1935).

Early Life

Merle Oberon was born Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson on February 19, 1911, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. She spent her early years in India before moving to England. She developed an interest in acting and began her career in British films.

Oberon made her film debut in the early 1930s and gained attention with The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), starring Charles Laughton. The success of the film helped her move into larger international productions.
