Biography

Michael Bowen is an American actor known for portraying a wide range of memorable supporting characters in film and television. With a career beginning in the early 1980s, he has appeared in more than 100 productions, working in crime dramas, action films, thrillers, comedies, and television series.

 Some of his best-known roles include Tommy in Valley Girl, Mark Dargus in Jackie Brown, Rick Spector in Magnolia, Buck in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Sheriff Stan Watkins in Walking Tall, Danny Pickett in Lost, and Jack Welker in Breaking Bad.

Early Life and Family

Michael Alexander Bowen was born on June 21, 1958, in Houston, Texas. He grew up in San Francisco in a creative family. His father was Beat painter Michael Bowen Sr., while his mother was actress Sonia Sorel. Through his mother's later marriage, he is the half-brother of actors Robert Carradine and Keith Carradine.

Growing up around artists and performers gave Bowen an early connection to the entertainment world. His family background and exposure to creative personalities eventually influenced his own path into acting.

Beginning of His Acting Career

Bowen began his professional acting career in the early 1980s. One of his earliest film appearances was in the science-fiction film Forbidden World (1982). He followed it with roles in Valley Girl (1983), The Wild Life (1984), Night of the Comet (1984), and Private Resort (1985).

His performance as Tommy in Valley Girl, starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman, became one of his early recognizable roles. The film developed a lasting cult following and helped establish Bowen as a character actor capable of playing tough and unconventional personalities.

Film Career

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Bowen steadily expanded his film résumé. He appeared in productions such as Iron Eagle, Less Than Zero, The Godfather Part III, The Player, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Love and a .45.

A significant stage of his career came during the 1990s, when he began receiving increasingly prominent supporting roles. In Bonnie & Clyde: The True Story (1992), he portrayed Buck Barrow, the brother of Clyde Barrow. He later appeared in True Crime and other films before beginning collaborations with major filmmakers.

Work with Quentin Tarantino

One of the most notable aspects of Bowen's film career has been his work in Quentin Tarantino productions. Bowen first appeared in Tarantino's Jackie Brown (1997), playing ATF agent Mark Dargus. He later worked with Tarantino again in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), portraying Buck, a disturbing hospital orderly.

Bowen subsequently appeared in Django Unchained (2012), playing a tracker. His recurring collaborations with Tarantino became an important part of his filmography.
