Biography

Michael Rennie (August 25, 1909 – June 10, 1971) was a British actor known for his elegant screen presence and versatile performances in British and Hollywood cinema. He became internationally famous for his role as the alien visitor Klaatu in the science-fiction classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).

Early Life

Michael Rennie was born Eric Alexander Rennie on August 25, 1909, in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. Before becoming an actor, he worked in several professions, including as a car salesman and factory manager. He later decided to pursue acting and began training in theatre.

Early Acting Career

Rennie entered films in the 1930s, initially appearing in small and uncredited roles. He gained valuable stage experience through repertory theatre before returning to cinema. His breakthrough came with the British film I'll Be Your Sweetheart (1945), which established him as a leading actor.

Hollywood Career

In 1950, Rennie was brought to Hollywood and signed by 20th Century Fox. His most famous role came in Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), where he played Klaatu, a peaceful alien ambassador who comes to Earth with a warning about humanity's future. The film became a landmark in science-fiction history.

Rennie appeared in Henry Koster's historical drama Desirée (1954) alongside Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons. He portrayed Charles XIV John of Sweden, adding historical depth to the story of Napoleon Bonaparte and Désirée Clary.

During the later part of his career, Rennie worked extensively in television. He starred as Harry Lime in the television series The Third Man (1959) and made guest appearances on several popular American television programs.

Personal Life

Michael Rennie was married twice and had children. He was known for his tall stature, refined voice, and gentlemanly personality, which made him a popular choice for roles involving authority figures and sophisticated characters.

Death

Michael Rennie died on June 10, 1971, in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, at the age of 61, due to emphysema.
