Biography
Michael Winner (October 30, 1935 – January 21, 2013) was a British film director, producer, and screenwriter known for his work in British and American cinema. Born in Hampstead, London, he began his career as a writer and television producer before moving into film direction.
Winner directed films across a variety of genres, including comedies, thrillers, dramas, and action films. His early notable works included The System (1964), I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967), and Hannibal Brooks (1969). He later established himself internationally with films such as The Mechanic (1972), starring Charles Bronson, and Death Wish (1974), which became one of his best-known films.
Winner frequently collaborated with Charles Bronson, directing him in several films, including The Mechanic, Death Wish, Death Wish II (1982), Death Wish 3 (1985), and Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (1987). He also directed The Sentinel (1977), The Big Sleep (1978), The Wicked Lady (1983), and Scream for Help (1984).
Outside filmmaking, Winner became a recognizable British media personality. He was also known for his outspoken personality, newspaper columns, and restaurant criticism. In his later years, he became particularly associated with the long-running television advertising campaign for a British insurance company.
Michael Winner died in London on January 21, 2013, at the age of 77. He is remembered particularly for his hard-edged action and thriller films and for his influential collaboration with Charles Bronson.
