Michelle Hurst is an American actress born on 1 June 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at Mount Holyoke College, graduating in 1974, and began her career in theatre before moving into film and television.
Hurst has appeared in a wide variety of films, including Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Airheads (1994), Smoke (1995), Stepmom (1998), In the Cut (2003), Sherrybaby (2006), Choke (2008), Frances Ha (2012), and Permission (2017).
On television, she has made appearances in several Law & Order productions, as well as New York Undercover, The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, and Last Tango in Halifax.
Hurst became particularly recognized for portraying Miss Claudette Pelage in the first season of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black (2013). Her performance, as one of the show's older and more experienced inmates, earned her and the ensemble a Satellite Award for Best Cast – Television Series.
