Biography
Míriam Colón was a Puerto Rican actress whose career spanned more than six decades across film, television, and theatre. Sources differ on her birth year: IMDb lists September 5, 1930, while several other sources give August 20, 1936. She was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and died on March 3, 2017, in New York City.
She began acting professionally in the 1950s and worked extensively on Broadway and television. Her film credits included One-Eyed Jacks (1961), The Appaloosa (1966), The Possession of Joel Delaney (1972), Back Roads (1981), Scarface (1983), Sabrina (1995), Lone Star (1996), and All the Pretty Horses (2000).
Colón became especially famous for playing Mama Montana, the mother of Tony Montana, in Scarface. She also appeared in Goal! The Dream Begins (2005) and later television productions including How to Make It in America, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Better Call Saul.
Beyond acting, she was an important figure in Puerto Rican theatre. She founded the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater in New York City, providing opportunities for Latino performers and productions. In 2014, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama.
She died at the age of 80, according to sources using the 1936 birth date, from complications related to a pulmonary infection.
