M. Manikandan

Biography

M. Manikandan is an Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, and cinematographer known for his significant contributions to Tamil cinema. Born in Usilampatti, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, he grew up in a family of police officers. Due to his father's frequent transfers, he spent his childhood in various towns across the state. After completing a diploma in automobile engineering, he developed a passion for photography and began working as a wedding photographer before pursuing formal training in filmmaking.

Manikandan entered the film industry as an assistant cinematographer in the mid-2000s. His directorial journey began with the short film Wind (2010), which received critical acclaim and was screened at several film festivals. The success of the short film paved the way for his feature-film career.

He gained national recognition with his debut feature film Kaaka Muttai (2015), a heartwarming drama about two underprivileged children whose dream is to taste pizza. The film was widely praised for its realistic storytelling and social commentary, earning the National Film Award for Best Children's Film and several other honours.

Following this success, Manikandan directed notable films such as Kuttrame Thandanai (2016), Aandavan Kattalai (2016), and Kadaisi Vivasayi (2022). His films are known for their humanistic themes, attention to detail, and portrayal of ordinary people's lives. Kadaisi Vivasayi, a moving tribute to traditional farming and rural life, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

Throughout his career, M. Manikandan has earned a reputation as one of Tamil cinema's most thoughtful and original filmmakers. His work combines artistic excellence with social relevance, making him a respected voice in contemporary Indian cinema.
