Mohammad Azharuddin

Biography

Mohammad Azharuddin is a former Indian cricketer, captain, and politician, celebrated for his elegant batting style and remarkable wristwork. Born on February 8, 1963, in Hyderabad, India, Azharuddin emerged as one of the most talented batsmen of his generation.

He made his Test debut for India in 1984 against England at Eden Gardens, scoring a century on debut — the first of three consecutive centuries in his first three Tests, a record that announced his arrival in grand style. Over his 15-year international career, Azharuddin represented India in 99 Tests and 334 One Day Internationals, scoring more than 15,000 runs across formats.

Azharuddin captained India in the 1990s, leading the team in three World Cups and achieving several memorable victories, particularly in home conditions. Known for his graceful stroke play, quick reflexes in the slip cordon, and calm leadership, he was one of India’s most admired cricketers during his playing days.

However, his career ended in controversy when he was implicated in a match-fixing scandal in 2000, leading to a life ban imposed by the cricket board. The ban was later lifted by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2012, which restored his reputation to some extent.

Following his cricket career, Azharuddin entered politics, joining the Indian National Congress and serving as a Member of Parliament from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
