Morgan Russell

Biography

Morgan Russell (1886–1953) was an American painter and an important pioneer of modernist abstraction. Born on October 25, 1886, in New York City, he studied sculpture before traveling to Europe, where he became influenced by modern European art.

Russell is best known for developing Synchromism, an abstract art movement he founded with Stanton Macdonald-Wright. The movement emphasized the use of color, rhythm and musical ideas in painting. The two artists promoted Synchromism in Paris and later in the United States.

His paintings featured bright colors, geometric forms and rhythmic compositions, reflecting influences from Cubism and the color theories of artists such as Robert Delaunay. Russell continued experimenting with abstraction throughout his career.

Morgan Russell died in 1953. He is remembered as one of the early American artists who helped establish color-based abstract painting and introduce modern European ideas into American art.
