Saravanan Surya Mani (1940 – 4 December 2025), popularly known as AVM Saravanan, was a prominent Indian film producer associated with Tamil cinema. A key figure behind the success and expansion of AVM Productions, he carried forward one of the most respected legacies in South Indian filmmaking.

 

 

Early Life and Background

AVM Saravanan was born in 1940 into a family deeply rooted in cinema. He was the son of A. V. Meiyappan, the legendary filmmaker who founded AVM Productions in 1945. Meiyappan is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Tamil cinema, and under his guidance, AVM Studios became a cornerstone of South Indian film production.

Growing up in this environment, Saravanan was immersed in the craft and business of filmmaking from an early age, eventually taking on significant responsibilities within the family enterprise.

 

 

Career and Contributions

As a producer, AVM Saravanan played an instrumental role in sustaining and modernizing AVM Productions through changing cinematic eras. He oversaw the production of several commercially successful and critically acclaimed films across decades.

As a producer, AVM Saravanan received significant recognition for his contributions to cinema. He won two Filmfare Awards South, reflecting both critical acclaim and popular success.

Saravanan was the father of M. S. Guhan, who also became a film producer, continuing the AVM family tradition in the Indian film industry.

 

 

Death

AVM Saravanan passed away on 4 December 2025, at the age of 85. He had been suffering from health issues for several years and was undergoing intermittent medical treatment. His death marked the end of an era for AVM Productions and Tamil cinema.
