Biography

M. T. Vasudevan Nair (9 August 1933 – 25 December 2024), popularly known as MT, was an acclaimed Indian writer, screenwriter, and film director who worked primarily in Malayalam literature and cinema. Born in Kudallur, Kerala, he became one of the most influential figures in modern Malayalam literature.

He began his career as a teacher and later joined journalism, eventually serving as an editor of Mathrubhumi Weekly. His literary works included novels, short stories, travel writing, literary criticism, and screenplays. His notable novels include Naalukettu, Kaalam, Manju, Asuravithu, and Randamoozham. His writing frequently explored family relationships, social change, human emotions, and the decline of Kerala's traditional joint-family system.

MT was also a major force in Malayalam cinema. He wrote more than 50 screenplays and directed films including Nirmalyam (1973), Bandhanam (1978), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), Parinayam (1994), and Oru Cheru Punchiri (2000). His debut directorial film, Nirmalyam, which he also wrote and produced, won the President's Gold Medal. Several of his screenplays received National and Kerala State Film Awards.

His literary achievements included the Jnanpith Award, which he received in 1995 for his overall contribution to Indian literature, and the Padma Bhushan in 2005. He also received numerous Sahitya Akademi and Kerala State Film Awards. In 2023, he was honoured with the Kerala Jyothi, the state's highest civilian honour. He died in Kozhikode on 25 December 2024, aged 91.

MT Vasudevan Nair's contribution to Malayalam literature and cinema remains significant, particularly for the depth of his characters, his sensitive portrayal of Kerala society, and his influential screenwriting.
