Biography

Mukesh Gautam is a distinguished Indian film director, primarily associated with Punjabi-language cinema. Born on July 22, 1960, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, he pursued his education at Panjab University, Chandigarh. Over the years, Gautam has made significant contributions to the Punjabi film industry and television, earning recognition for his directorial ventures and documentary works.

Early Life and Education

Mukesh Gautam completed his schooling at the Army Public School in Dagshai in 1977. He later graduated from Panjab University, Chandigarh, where he was an active participant in the Department of Indian Theatre. His academic background laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors in the entertainment industry.

Career

Gautam began his career in the early 1980s as an actor, debuting in a supporting role in the National Award-winning Hindi film "Sparsh" (1980), directed by Sai Paranjpye. Despite his initial foray into acting, his passion for storytelling led him to transition into directing.

In 2001, he made his directorial debut with the Punjabi television show "Sarnawan." He continued to make his mark in Punjabi cinema with films such as "Akhiyaan Udeekdian" (2009), "Ek Noor" (2011), "Kuknoos" (2016), and "Baghi Di Dhee" (2022). His work often explores profound themes, with "Ek Noor" addressing the topic of organ donation. "Baghi Di Dhee" received the National Award for Best Punjabi Film at the 70th National Awards ceremony.

Beyond feature films, Gautam has directed docudramas focusing on the lives and contributions of spiritual leaders and prominent Punjabi artists. His subjects include Baba Sheikh Farid, Baba Bulleh Shah, and Waris Shah, and renowned Punjabi singers such as Surinder Kaur, Kuldeep Manak, and Gurmeet Bawa. His documentary on Sayyed Waris Shah earned him a national award from the radio and television fraternity.

In 2008, Gautam expanded his influence in the media industry by acquiring the PTC Punjabi Network, where he currently serves as the Chief Advisor. Under his leadership, the network has flourished, becoming a significant platform for Punjabi content.

Personal Life

Mukesh Gautam is married to Anjali Gautam. The couple has two daughters, Yami Gautam and Surilie Gautam, and a son, Ojas Gautam. Yami Gautam is a well-known Bollywood actress, recognized for her roles in films like "Vicky Donor" and "Uri: The Surgical Strike." Surilie Gautam is also an actress, having appeared in Punjabi films and television series. Surilie is married to Jasraj Singh Bhatti, son of the late comedian Jaspal Bhatti.
