  • Najmul Hossain Shanto, born on August 25, 1998, in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, has emerged as a key figure in Bangladesh cricket. A left-handed batsman with the ability to bowl right-arm off-breaks, Shanto currently captains the national Test and One Day International (ODI) teams.

  • Early Life and Domestic Career
  • Shanto's cricketing journey began at a young age. His talent was evident early on when he scored a double century at the school level. This achievement brought him to the attention of selectors, leading to his inclusion in Bangladesh's squad for the 2014 Under-19 World Cup at just 15 years old. He continued to impress, scoring his maiden domestic century for Rajshahi Division soon after. In December 2017, he and Mizanur Rahman set a domestic first-class record in Bangladesh with an opening partnership of 341 runs.

  • Shanto was also the highest run-scorer in the 2017–18 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, amassing 749 runs in 16 matches. His consistent performances in domestic cricket earned him opportunities in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he played for teams like Comilla Victorians, Khulna Titans, and Khulna Tigers. In the 2022–23 BPL season, he was the tournament's top scorer with 516 runs and was named Player of the Tournament.

  • International Career
  • Shanto's international career began with his selection for Bangladesh's squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He made his Test debut against New Zealand in January 2017. He debuted in ODIs against Afghanistan in September 2018 and in T20Is against Zimbabwe in September 2019.

  • Under-19 World Cup: Represented Bangladesh in the 2014 and 2016 editions, earning consecutive Man of the Match awards in 2016 against South Africa and Scotland.
  • First Test Century: Scored his maiden Test century (163 runs) against Sri Lanka in April 2021.   
  • T20 World Cup 2022: Was Bangladesh's highest run-scorer with 180 runs, including two half-centuries.   

 

  • First ODI Half-Century: Achieved his first ODI half-century against England in March 2023, also contributing to Bangladesh's first-ever T20I win against England in the same series.   
  • Two Test Centuries in a Match: Became the second Bangladeshi to score two centuries in a single Test, achieving this feat against Afghanistan in June 2023 (146 and 124 runs).
