Biography
Nallandi (14 October 1937 – 1 February 2022) was an Indian farmer and actor from Usilampatti in Tamil Nadu. For most of his life, he worked as a farmer and was deeply connected to agriculture and rural traditions. Despite having no previous acting experience, he became widely known for his remarkable performance in the Tamil film Kadaisi Vivasayi.
Director M. Manikandan cast Nallandi in the lead role because of his authentic farming background and deep understanding of village life. In the film, Nallandi portrayed Mayandi, an elderly farmer who remains devoted to agriculture while others abandon farming. His natural and heartfelt performance won praise from critics and audiences alike.
Kadaisi Vivasayi was released in 2022 and received widespread acclaim for its realistic portrayal of rural life and farming. Nallandi's performance was particularly celebrated for its sincerity and emotional depth. He was posthumously awarded a Special Mention at the 69th National Film Awards, recognizing his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.
Sadly, Nallandi passed away shortly before the film's release. Although his acting career consisted of only one film, his portrayal of Mayandi left a lasting impact on Tamil cinema. Today, he is remembered as a symbol of simplicity, dedication to farming, and the enduring spirit of rural India.
